03 The Vital Role of Trees
03 The Vital Role and Our Partnership with Trees
If you think about the role of trees within this massive ecological structure, it’s hard not to be amazed. Trees support our lives. We cannot survive without them. Look out your window spot a tree or many (if you are lucky), and get a sense of what that means, to them.
We literally exchange breath for survival. The oxygen a tree releases to the air keeps us alive while the carbon dioxide we release into the air is a vital food source for their growth and photo synthesis.
Trees are highly functional. Trees act as natural filters, absorbing carbon dioxide and pollutants from the air. They provide food and privacy. They provide shelter and housing for animals. They filter airborne particles, provide windbreak and storm protection, stabilize soil and control erosion. Trees muffle noise. When their roots die, they become food for insects and soil dwellers. Fallen trunks become sleeping hollows and organic matter that rebuilds soil. Over time tree roots amazingly break down rock to form soil. They provide shade for cooling. Their leaves return nutrients to the soil and increase humus. They filter and store water. They are sustainable, provide fire for light and warmth, and shelter.
Trees are beautiful. They ebb and flow with seasons, blooming to their full potential then releasing and withdrawing what’s necessary to winter over. They flower and bear fruit. Their trunks, leaves and needles display a wild and wide variety of shapes and colors, texture and form. They have scents and make sounds. They dance and bend, they reach for water and reach for light, some upright, some hang and sway.
In Feng Shui trees help improve human wellness and well-being, they add living energy to the environment. Each species carries its own type of chi to a space -e.g, bamboo carries longevity chi and orange trees embody wealth luck. It was under the Sacred Bodhi tree that Buddha spent his first week in mediation after attaining enlightenment.
Trees are massive energy sources. They nourish human chi gently by neutralizing imbalanced ions and nurturing organs. They are flexible, strong, grounding and healing. Standing within an auric range of a tree or touching it connects our energy field with the tree’s energy field. Trees provide us oxygen, help reduce stress and improve mental, emotional, and physical health.
Trees are magnificent. Trees hold ancestral knowledge and wisdom. They are alive, transformational and interactive. Trees are not passive, science shows they are sentient, collective intelligence. Trees communicate, learn, and share nutrients through underground networks. They recognize your energy, and when in danger warn their neighbors. Mother trees nurture their saplings. Trees possess memory and are highly adaptive to their environment.
I thoroughly encourage communing with trees. Walk and talk with the trees. Thank them, sit with them, listen, breath with them, soak them in -it can shift your world momentarily and forever.
