01 Sacredness in the Land
Every landscape has a spiritual component, an energetic resonance.
The land and all of nature contains spiritual energy, — life force, the flow of energy, vital energy, vibrational energy, frequency. It can be found in the land itself or in a physical object, like a stone, or a tree, it can be transient, like a river, cloud, or the wind, or something invisible, like a spiritual presence.
Landscapes are the keepers of history. The land is our ancestor. It holds billions of years of history and stories of its past. Imagine all that may have taken place on the very spot you are standing. The land does not forget. It also does not judge. It provides us the support of a great mother transmuting energy when asked, holding, supporting, grounding. The land provides sustenance and beauty.
The landscape responds to our attention, interaction and intentions. When you look at a tree and say what a beautiful tree, know that that tree is looking right back at you with the same reverence, reflecting your vibration. —Every time I walk into a section of woods near my house where I have spent countless hours practicing, growing and learning the walk of this sacred path, I can feel the attention on me. I get a distinct welcome; the trees and landscape, the spirit of place, embraces and welcomes me back.
The landscape and natural world engage us in conversation continually. Nature is not oblivious to our presence. How often have we been on a walk and noticed a squirrel a deer a bird or a feather in our path, sometimes waiting for our attention, sometimes grabbing our attention. This awareness is happening at the level of trees and insects, at the level of rocks and the land itself. Research has shown that trees are immediately aware when a person walks into the forest. They can be miles away and will react not only to your actions but even to your mental patterns. If you enter the forest on a mission to cut down a tree, the tree will actually know and will send out chemicals across the air warning all the other trees about the approaching intention. They will also communicate through electrical impulses underground.
Being one with this unseen world, these energies, to the spirit of place, to all this magnificence in our midst remains in our individual hands and hearts. Humans have an innate ability to communicate with nature and the sacred. The human body is the greatest receiver on earth. One of the most important things we can do for ourselves, humankind and the earth is to connect with the land and natural world that we live upon. To be good to ourselves is to be good to the earth and to be good to earth we are good to ourselves and to all of humanity.
While all land is sacred, the life force varies significantly. There are different levels and types of energy in the landscape. Some locations have greater powers. Ancient monuments around the world were built on the land to house or mark powerful energy spots. Locations like this can alter and uplift human consciousness.
